The department of Community Health Nursing, CSI College of Nursing, Marthandam organized various programmes in our adopted area (Maruthancode) and Block Primary Health Centre in Edaicode and Urban Primary Health Centre in Padmanabhapuram. Our IV year and II year B.Sc(N) students had excellent exposure in this practical field.
IV year and II year students involved all the activities which was conducted by PHC, like school health programmes, Pulse Polio Immunization, Antenatal Clinic, Immunization, well-baby clinic, Health Camp, Communicable and Non communicable disease scheme.
Students were divided into small groups and allotted in all the areas. Doctors take classes in their leisure time. Students were posted in all the areas like, OP, Wards, Theatre, AYUSH department, Dental department and Lab. Students completed all the requirements in the community posting.
Students performed role play, health education and health assessment in school health programme.
II year students conducted survey in Maruthancode panchayat and estimated vital statistics of that area.
II year and IV year students visited Anganwadi and done health assessment and small role plays were conducted for them regarding ‘Dental Hygiene’ and ‘Personal Hygiene’. Underfive children were enjoyed and responded very well.
All the students conducted health education and counselling programmes on various topics. Students prepared different types of AV aids like posters, flash cards, flip charts and flannel graphs to give health education and counselling.
For each students 10 families were allotted and gave preventive and promotion care. To improve the nutritional status of the family members cooking demonstrations were done on affordable and easily accessible food items.
IV year students actively involved in family planning programme like insertion of IUCD. They maintained all the records in PHC and adopted area centre.
II year B.Sc(N) students were visited Filter house, Aavin milk dairy and Sewage treatment plant on 01-04-2019 after getting prior permission. They were visited Leprosy Hospital in Udaiyarvilai on 31-03-2019 to fulfil the communicable disease hospital visit and gained knowledge regarding universal precaution techniques.
IV year students conducted group projects on “A Study to assess the knowledge regarding food borne diseases among mothers of under five children in Padmanabhapuram Panchayat” and “A Study to assess the knowledge regarding tobacco and its ill effects among adults in Maruthancode Panchayat”.
Students were evaluated by unit tests, periodical exams, quiz, assignments and their clinical performance. OSCE also used to assess the practical knowledge of the students. Theory classed were completed as per the university syllabus.
At the end of the posting and theory classes students gained more knowledge and developed positive attitude regarding the preventive and promotive care to apply it whenever and where ever necessary.
